Unit 32 - AS2 - Task 3

Proposal
Prepared by
Charlie Parnell
I am going to create a suite of idents for the channel CBBC. Each ident will be a stick man playing a certain sport. At the end of the ident, there will be an option to loop it, so you can play it as many times as you want.

Unit 32 - AS2 - Task 2

Designing the Suite

All of the above storyboards I think are suitable for the CBBC channel because they are all sports themed and are very energetic. Some of the idents that currently exist on the channel are sports themed. As children tend to be full of energy, I think that this'll be just right for the feel of the channel. I think that each of these idents are suitable to play at anytime of the day, especially during the day as this is when kids often play the most. The idents will keep the interest of the targeted audience as I think that it will appeal to most of the children who watch the channel.
The idents will be most suitable to play in a time of year where a sporting event is happening such as; the world cup or olympics.

Unit 32 - AS2 - Task 1

Ideas Generation
Picture 1
The channel i am going to be creating an ident for is CBBC. Picture 1 shows some of the themes that i am considering to base my suite around. I have changed the football theme to a sports theme as i can create a lot more different types of idents to make the suite more interesting. Picture 2 shows what time of day and what time of year or social event that the ident would be perfect for. Obviously this ident can be played all year round but would be ideal for these events, such as the olympics and world cup. I think that this is a good theme idea as most children enjoy sports and being active.
Picture 2

Another theme shown in picture 1 is the school theme. This theme i think can be played any time of day but only at the time of year when everyone is at school. This theme can show things like school crowds, bell ringing and children in a classroom. I think that this theme is a good idea all of the kids who watch the CBBC channel can relate to this.
Another theme shown in picture 1 & 2 is a video game theme. Again, this theme can be played at anytime of day and anytime of year, however i think the most suitable time of day would be the evening as this is the most frequent time that people are going t be playing video games. I think that most people who watch the CBBC channel can relate to this.
My final theme shown in the pictures is a music theme. Again i think that this theme can be shown at any time of year and at any time of day. However if i had to choose, i would put it on in the evening. Everyone likes music so i think everyone who watches CBBC can appreciate this ident.

I am going to create an ident on a sports theme because i think that people being active will keep the attention of the audience better then all of the other themes. I think it would appeal to the audience because children are very active and have a lot of energy so they may be able to identify themselves with the people being active doing sports in the ident.

Unit 32 - AS1 - Task 3

Understanding the design of a suite of television indents

A suite of television indents is when a television channel designs a new ident, however they don't just create one ident, they create a whole suite of idents that consist of a constant theme. Each ident will look different but all will have something in common which relates them to each other.  This creates variety amongst them which can keep the audience interested. A good example of a channel doing this is BBC 1, which used a circle theme to create a loop at the of the ident:

The theme in this suit of idents by BBC 1 has a constant theme of a build up to a loop of something/someone moving around in a circle. I think that this theme of idents appeals to all type of people as there is no obvious type of audience that these appeal to.

Each theme has a different feel to them, from the energetic dogs running about to the people creating the moon. The dogs may be played during the morning to perk some people up before they go to school or work. This ident may also be played during the summer as it follows the feel of summer. The moon may be played at night because it is calm and relaxing so this may reflect people's moods before going to bed. The kites may be shown during the winter as they have a winter feel to them because everyone in the ident is all dressed up in winter clothes, and it is also quite windy.
All of these idents are designed to keep the viewers entertained while they are being told what is coming next.

The idents may be used in order to convey the channel in a certain way. The suite of idents BBC 1 have chosen may be to convey diversity, in that the channel appeals to everyone as the idents do not appeal significantly to a particular type of person. Each ident shows something different but in the same way so it keeps a constant theme but still have different types of idents. The design of the idents are very effective as if you saw one, you would definitely know that you are watching BBC 1 as they are very easy to recognise.
Each ident last the same amount of time and follows the same structure to it. This is so they can use any loop they want if they need to fill in a certain amount of time on the channel.

Unit 32 - AS1 - Task 2

Understanding the limitations of the television ident

A television ident will have to include themes from the previous TV idents that are already on the channel. Each of these themes may have limitations to them however some of them may include some advantages.

Typography

Things to consider when focusing on typography are; font, size, boldness, logo and shape. Typically each ident on a television channel must follow a similar typography, however every TV channel has a different typography. For example the typography that the BBC use are not going to be the same as what a channel such as E4 may use, as each channel attracts a different type of viewer. A limitation to keeping with the same typography as all the other idents on the channel is that they may seem all the same and theres less freedom to be creative when making them. Some designers may find this frustrating. However a good point to using the same typography in all the idents is that it retains the overall theme and feel of the channel which will engage the viewer more.

Colour

The colour of the idents are important when creating one because each channel will have a certain colour associated with it due to their idents. For example, the BBC will not use the colour purple as that is the colour that is associated with E4. As well as E4 will not use the colours black and white as this is what is associated with the BBC. Like typography this can be limiting as you can only use a certain channel depending on the channel so it may get in the way of creativity, however this can be good as it forces the ident to follow the same theme as the idents before it, so it follows the theme of the channel.

Aspect Ratio

All idents must fit into the aspect ratio of the television screen, so all idents that are on TV must be in the ratio of 16:9. If it is not in this ratio then it may be too big for the screen so the edges may be cut out, if it is too small then it will be surrounded by a black box to fill in the gaps. This may limiting as you may not be able to fit some things in as they may be too large, a good point may be that it is easier considering else is in this ratio.

Adhering to a desired tone

keeping to a desired tone is taken into consideration so it keeps the attention of the desired audience. If you show an ident that they may show on 'cbeebies' on BBC 1, then the audience may be confused as it does not relate to the type of programmes shown on the channel and may result in the audience to switch over the cannel. A limitation to keeping with a desired tone is that it may be boring after a while and audiences may get bored and switch the channel over, however this is also a good thing as keeping with a desired tone may keep an audiences attention as they may be in the mood for that tone because they tuned into the channel.

Duration

The duration of an ident may be actually longer than what they actually show on TV. This is because just in case they may have more time to fill, so they will play the ident for longer, a good example of this is a BBC 1 ident;
This is the longer version of the ident:

This is the shorter version:

A limitation to this is it may cut out some shots that are important to keep up the feel of the ident so may ruin the feel of the ident. However a good thing about it is that the channel can choose how long the ident goes in for.
